Our client chose Proteus as a solution to the challenge presented by high volumes of trade effluent being tankered into their plant, often well above the stated COD levels which resulted in significant regulatory fines and problems for the biological WWTP employed at the site. Traditional methods of testing for COD at the site, which involved laboratory analysis times of 2 hours per test, were not realistic given the turn-around times for tanker discharge and requirements for running multiple samples per day.
Proteus supplied a P-35 model combining a Tryptophan fluorometer, turbidity and temperature sensor with derived COD parameter calibration function to give mg/L at 1 second intervals. To facilitate rapid and dynamic sampling of tanker effluent and across the whole WWTP the Bluetooth battery pack, Proteus manager app and a 5m waterproof cable were specified.

With this set-up operators are now able to gauge the COD level of trade effluent instantaneously with no requirement for reagents or incubation time and make informed decisions on how to handle the waste based on current plant loadings and treatment plant performance. The client was able to challenge any under reported values and charge appropriately whilst also reducing potential regulatory violations.
